Excerpts:
Mao’s version of Communism was to be foundation for a purer, fairer more progressive state than the one have emerged in Soviet Union.
Landlords were killed.
Birds were accused, (spoiling) the crops. … mobilize the people to kill the birds, villagers of all ages joined in… whoever killed the most sparrows praised and rewards, those who got fewer criticized and encouraged to do better on next day.
In fact the campaign back-fired, with the sparrows gone, more insects survived to strip the crops.
people were asked to look-out for neighbors or fellow workers who seem to meet the party’s description rightist, or capitalist, or counter revolutionaries, they were then denounced.
But the boldest step to harness the energy and the enthusiasm of the people came in 1958, to speed up progress Mao wanted to use the force he believed in most. China’s share numbers for his great Leap forward. Propaganda cartoon showed the how Chinese men went to overtake the western industry and food production.
Lands, ceremonially given to the peasants after the revolution was not taken back, and now peasants were herded in huge commune.
Private ownership has already been eliminated and now the family life was to be destroyed as well.
(Mao ordered to double the product of steel)
Slowly it became clearer that after so much effort in time, after so much wood have been burned, and so many pipes and pans consigned into the flames, the Steel produced was impure weak and useless.
Full effect of disastrous experiments could bee seen in 1959, while the peasants were making steal, they had done little else …
In 1960 scarcity turned into major famine.
In a secret report:
Their own figure showed that over 20 million died for the famine, it was almost certainly more.
Great Leap Failed.
Revolutionary Enthusiasm hadn’t been enough.
In aftermath Mao kept aside and left the president Leo Sao Chiun the country.
Large Commune abandoned, Chinese Peasants were allowed to have land again, and could sell the products in open market. They were allowed to live with their family and return to their normal life.
Revolution means Rebellion and Violence.
Books burnt, Museum pillaged
The anarchy spread, school and hospitals closed, offices and factories were in chaos.
We didn’t know what have happened to country.
Many workers committed suicide.
After 2 years Army called … to restore orders and help reestablish the party’s authority.
Red Guards were sent to country side to cool off and learn from peasants.
And the Cultural Revolution ended in 1976, with Mao himself.
